Project NamePET: A Personal Embodied Trainer to Promote Physical Exercise at Home

Introduction: Exercise is an important factor is sustaining and strengthening a person’s health, yet is often neglected due to lack of motivation. PET (Personal Embodied Trainer) is a highly interactive mobile-wearable-TV application that helps guide users through physical exercises, track progress, and provide feedback for improving exercise form.

Goal Statement: There are many mobile applications targeted to fitness enthusiasts. However, very few applications have capabilities for tracking user movements and providing accurate feedback on exercise form. PET aims to address this feature through the use of motion sensors and data analysis.

Approach: We first had a proof of concept of the PET through pure software. After which we started to implement the necessary hardware components to create a wearable band, so that this technology can be easy to use and comfortable to wear for the consumer. This enables us to target those in need of fitness enthusiasts and expand into the physical theraphy and rehabilitation market and those who want an easy method of exercising at home.

Schedule: The primary focus of the Fall 2017 quarter was to focus on the properties of hardware devices that will enable quick and efficient data output to the software application. In the Winter 2018 quarter, our primary objective will be to create the wearable band.

Milestones:

  1. Week of Oct. 23: Have the necessary hardware components

  2. Week of Nov. 13: Enable the hardware to output data

  3. Week of Dec. 4: Correct reading of data in software application, that in returns a result to the consumer.

Progress and Current Status: Currently, we have found the necessary hardware components to create the PET wearable band. Images of the hardware is included below:

We are currently testing the hardware. The hardware that is going to be used needs to be able to output data to the application correctly. Once, we have confirmation that the data received by the application is accurate, then the team will design the wearable band, assemble a prototype to be tested, and then create a final version of the wearable band.
