Goal Statement

Our goal is to develop an application that uses a mix of modern and popular concepts and technologies. We are creating an  entertainment system that allows the user to control a television set with a Kinect Sensor, which combines principles from embedded systems development, machine learning, and computer vision. We ultimately want to make something that is relevant in our field, while also being fun to work on.

Approach

Our general approach is to use existing Kinect libraries to obtain gesture data, and to assign certain human gestures to manipulate devices in our system. We connect a Microsoft Kinect to a Raspberry Pi 3, which handles both the machine learning and the computer vision aspect of our product. We also develop a custom IR transmitter circuit, which sends commands to devices via IR signals.

Our system involves relatively new technologies in our field, mainly machine learning and computer vision, and innovates the common home entertainment system. While companies such as Samsung have a smart television that works in a similar fashion, our system is universal, in the sense that any device that can be controlled by an IR remote is compatible with our system.
